Nando’s Vergelegen Plein
November 22, 2024Nando’s has opened at Vergelegen Plein Shopping Centre in the Western Cape, showcasing a vibrant celebration of South African design excellence. This new Casa, a testament to Nando’s commitment to local talent, features the brilliant patterns ofBonolo Chepape, as well as curated art and design from a host of other South African creatives and interior design by REDDECO.

Upon entering the Vergelegen Plein Casa, visitors are greeted with rich hues of burgundy and striking oversized patterns on the ceiling. These designs, by Bonolo, are repeated on the order counter, complemented by protruding ebony slatted timber, creating a dynamic focal point. The walls, clad in slatted ebony timber with cork sheet inlays, provide a warm, inviting atmosphere, enhanced by subtle cultural elements in the tiles and backrest details.

The space is further brought to life with strategically placed contemporary industrial furniture, acting as art installations that balance modernity with tradition. These pieces honour unique South African designers, featuring Naturalis Miyabi outdoor chairs, Plantr planters, Saks Corner custom hand-wash units, and Pedersen and Lennard bollards. Lighting by Mash.T and Abode Design enhances the cultural essence, creating a cohesive and immersive environment.

Bonolo, the founder of Lulasclan, was a finalist in the 2018 edition ofNando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD).

The HYD programme, managed by Clout/SA on behalf of Nando’s, is a premier biennial design initiative in South Africa. It offers young designers the opportunity to prototype their winning designs and receive tailored mentorship. Clout/SA aims to create a globally recognised South African Design Category Brand by supporting young design talent. The programme has launched many successful careers, includingThabisa Mjo of Mash T. Design, the inaugural competition winner in 2016.

The opening of Nando’s Vergelegen Plein is a testament to the power of local design talent and the impactful partnerships that nurture it. Bonolo’s vibrant patterns and the thoughtful integration of South African design elements make this new Casa not just a place to enjoy good food, but also a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. Nando’s continues to demonstrate that great design and great food go hand in hand.
